Poonia accepts Samuels challenge but spurns January date

New Delhi:  Commonwealth Games gold medallist Krishna Poonia is game for the USD 20,000 winner-takes-all discus throw contest with world champion Dani Samuels of Australia but rejected January 22 date for the duel as she wants to spend time with her family after a gruelling season.

Poonia said she has been contacted by Samuels' representatives but has made it clear that she is ready for the contest in India next month before Asian Games which starts on November 12 or it will have to be after February next year.

Samuels' coach Hayden Knowles had proposed a January 22 contest between Poonia and the Australian world champion who had pulled out of the Commonwealth Games citing security and health concerns.

"I have accepted Dani's challenge and my federation has also given me permission. The two managers are discussing the date now. If Dani wants to come to India for the contest I am ready to take her in November before Asian Games. But I can't go abroad now as I am preparing for the Asian Games in Guangzhou," Poonia told reporters here.

"In January, I want to spend some time with my family. After January, I have no problem going to Australia for the contest. It can be anytime before World Championships (in August in South Korea)," she said.

Poonia's husband Virendra said she is ready to take on Samuels anytime between March and the World Championships in August if not next month.

"If she (Dani) does not come to India next month before the Asian Games it can be anytime between March and August. After the gruelling season Poonia wants to take rest at least a month or two. For now, she is concentrating on her preparations for the Asian Games," he said.

If the contest materialises, it would be the first of its kind high-stake duel involving an Indian athlete.

Hurt by the reported comments of Poonia that Samuels had pulled out of the Commonwealth Games due to "poor form", the support staff of the Australian had dared the Indian to the contest.

Knowles had proposed to hold the contest at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Center as part of Pirtek Athletic All Stars Meet which is considered as athletics counterpart of Twenty20 cricket with celebrities from Hollywood and sports world taking part.

Pirtek Athletic Allstars organisers will raise the USD 20,000 amount for the contest between Poonia and Samuels through sponsors.

Recently on September 15, world and Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt took part in men's 100m relay event in the Pirtek Athletic Allstars Meet.

In that Meet, Samuels won the discus throw event with a 61.90m effort to beat Olympic champion Stephanie Brown Trafton of United States and former world champion Beatrice Faumina of New Zealand, who finished fifth in Commonwealth Games.

Hurdler confident ahead of Asian Games

China's star hurdler Liu Xiang is targeting his third successive victory at the Asian Games next month, one of his biggest events during a prolonged comeback from an Achilles' tendon injury.
In the picture taken on October 22, Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang is in Shanghai Xinzhuang Training Base for training to prepare for the sixteenth Asian Games which will be held in Guangzhou in November.
In the picture taken on October 22, Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang is in Shanghai Xinzhuang Training Base for training to prepare for the sixteenth Asian Games which will be held in Guangzhou in November.
"I want to win at my third Asian Games and add one gold medal for China," Liu said on Friday after his last public training session before the Asiad in his hometown, Shanghai. "I'm in good form recently and I want to get the right feeling back gradually."
The 27-year-old was forced out of the men's 110m hurdles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by an Achilles' injury, disappointing a huge crowd of home fans.
After surgery months later in Houston and almost a year of rehabilitation, Liu made his comeback in September 2009 at the IAAF Shanghai Golden Grand Prix meet and narrowly missed out on first place, finishing in an encouraging time of 13.15.
His form later slumped in three successive domestic events, though. He finished seventh at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in March, his first international race after the injury, and lost to compatriot Shi Dongpeng soon after at the Shanghai Diamond League competition.
"My biggest opponent in each race is myself, and I think my confidence should be based on real power," the former world champion and world record-holder said.
"In the recent two or three years, I took in less competition than in 2005 and 2006 and the training intensity is far from before as well. Now I'm trying to make it up and the key point is the ability in competition.
"I'm always optimistic and I think I'm still in good form. Since I'm making improvement, my confidence will pile up as well."
Liu received a check-up from his doctor, Tom Clanton, who performed the surgery on him in Houston, days before the public training session. According to Liu's coach, Sun Haiping, the situation is improving.
"(Liu) didn't feel good after intensive training before, but now he feels not as bad," Sun said. "He can finish between 13.30 and 13.40 in the competition now and he will return to the international stage next year."

Seniors can retire after winning Asiad: Zeeshan

hockey commonwealth games Seniors can retire after winning Asiad: Zeeshan
Zeeshan said that coach Michel de van Heuvel should not be blamed for the team's performance at the Commonwealth Games, since he had joined the team recently. -AFP/File Photo

LAHORE: Welcoming the return of veterans Sohail Abbas and Salman Akbar for the Asian Games, Pakistan hockey captain Zeeshan Ashraf feels the senior players can conclude their careers on a high in the continental extravaganza to set a nice platform for the budding players for the 2012 London Olympics.
“Personally, I feel the senior players including me are in the best shape to deliver at the moment. And the Asian Games is a great opportunity for us to record a happy ending to our careers,” fullback Zeeshan said while talking to Dawn on Monday.
“After the Asian Games there is no big competition until the 2012 Olympic Games and after the Asiad juniors should be included in the team to groom them for the London Games. [Therefore] it will be better for the seniors to call it a day [after the Asian Games],” Zeeshan reckoned.
He said the decision of calling back Sohail and experienced goalkeeper Salman should deliver, hoping both would help the team win the Asian Games title.
“I have great hopes from Sohail since the team was lacking in short-corner department in his absence,” he said.
On whether Sohail`s comeback would not disturb the team combination, Zeeshan dispelled the impression saying he (Sohail) was a seasoned campaigner who had played with the same players for a long time in different stints.
Sohail, after being dropped by the Hanif Khan-led selection committee for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, was also not considered for national team`s last tour to Europe and the Commonwealth Games.
However, after the team`s pathetic show in the Commonwealth Games, the PHF took a U-turn recalling the short-corner expert with a hope to win the Asian Games title next month, the main target of the current PHF administration.
Zeeshan stressed new coach Michel de van Heuvel should not be criticised for the poor sixth position Pakistan gained in the Commonwealth Games, since the Dutch had joined the team recently.
“Quick changes in the team management cannot bring any positive results and it is better to give someone sufficient time to show his skills,” Zeeshan said, referring to his team`s coach.
Meanwhile, Zeeshan did not agree to the advice of some great Olympians that Pakistan could win matches only with an offensive strategy.
“For playing attacking game, you should have a strong defence too, otherwise, in case of a counter-attack [by the opponent team] a weak defence can concede goals. Therefore, a strategy based upon keeping a proper balance between attack and defence is more useful,” the Pakistan captain said.
Asked how he treats India as rivals in the Asian Games after two consecutive defeats against them in the recent past (World Cup and Commonwealth Games), Zeeshan while acknowledging India`s fine performance in the said encounters, vowed the Greenshirts would face them in the Asiad with a new strategy.
“Obviously, we have been working on a new plan against the Indians, and hopefully it will work as the boys are eager to win the Asian Games,” he said.

Josiah all pumped up for another strong showing in Asiad

PETALING JAYA: Track cyclist Josiah Ng (pic) made Malaysian cycling history with a gold medal-winning effort in the Delhi Commonwealth Games early this month but he has consigned it to the back of his mind.
The preparations for the Guangzhou Asian Games take centre stage and Josiah resumed training in Melbourne with the rest of the track squad under coach John Beasley last week.
His triumph in the keirin event in New Delhi and a bronze medal from the team sprint have invigorated Josiah and he is all pumped up for another strong showing in Guangzhou.
Two-time world championship silver medallist Azizul Hasni Awang had finished first in the Commonwealth Games kerin final but he was disqualified for what was deemed a dangerous sprinting move. To Malaysia’s relief, Josiah was the second-place finisher to be promoted to gold medal position.
Josiah, who has been riding for the country for the past decade, is looking forward to competing in the Asian Games for a third time with plenty of optimism.
“It used to be Azizul alone taking the pressure but I’m glad I got my level up at the right time,” said the 30-year-old.
“It has been a difficult couple of years as I was always in the limelight before and along came Azizul. It was tough for me, especially as Azizul and Rizal (Tisin) were winning medals at the world championships and World Cup.
“These younger guys provided me with the push I needed to find myself again. But everything is behind me.
“It’s now back to Asian Games training.”
In the two previous Asiad, Josiah won a silver medal on both occasions. It was in the keirin event in 2002 (Busan) and he got on the rostrum in the same position for the sprint in 2006 (Doha).
Malaysia secured their best-ever haul of 1-1-1 in Commonwealth Games cycling in New Delhi and Josiah is keeping his fingers crossed that they can match or better it in Guangzhou.
At the Delhi games, Rizal started the ball rolling with a silver in the 1km time trial.
“The Commonwealth Games is A-class and we surpassed our expectations. Keep in mind, we got four medals but we were robbed of one,” he said.
“We want to go to China and match it but we really have to improve a lot. But if we get everything right and hit our peak, we will be lethal at the Asian Games.”
For the Guangzhou Games, Josiah is down for the individual keirin and sprint events with Azizul.
The Melbourne-based track squad will be leaving early for Guangzhou next week ahead of the competitions beginning on Nov 15.
The only time Malaysia won gold medals in Asiad cycling was 40 years ago. Malaysia won two gold medals then in Bangkok in 1970 through Daud Ibrahim and Ng Joo Ngan. It was 32 years later in Busan that Josiah ended a medal drought for Malaysia with the silver in keirin

Pitcher Kim Kwang-hyun Out of Running for Asian Games

Kim Kwang-hyun Kim Kwang-hyun
In bad news for the Korean national baseball team for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou next month, the season's top pitcher in the Korean Baseball League, Kim Kwang-hyun of the SK Wyverns, is out of the squad due to health problems.

The Wyverns submitted a doctor's note for Kim to the Korea Baseball Organization on Monday, when camp training began. Kim needs one full month of absolute rest as he is suffering from paralysis of the facial muscles due to fatigue. He was hospitalized on Thursday last week, and his condition has greatly improved since then, but rigorous physical activity could aggravate the problems and cause other trouble, according to SK.

Cho Bum-hyun, the national team manager, who had planned to start Kim against Japan, said, "It's a pity because Kim is an absolute necessity to the team. I'll select an alternative pitcher as soon as possible after discussing it with the coaching staff."

Twenty-two out of 24 players on the national team, with the exception of Kim and Kim Tae-kyun of Chiba Lotte Marines, were present in the first day of camp training at the Hotel Nongshim in Busan.

A good chance to beat India: Rehan

Olympian Isahuddin Siddique wants nothing but gold in China. PHOTO: AFP
LAHORE: Pakistan hockey player Rehan Butt believes that playing India at a neutral venue during the Asian Games will give Pakistan a good opportunity to beat their arch rivals and avenge the two defeats this year.
“It would be a different game when we take on India at the Asian Games,” Rehan told reporters. “On both occasions, in the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games (CWG), India had home advantage and the crowd support but this time they have to play us at a neutral venue which changes things.”
Pakistan have had a disappointing year so far following poor finishes in both events. But Rehan remains confident of a good show in China. Rehan asserted that the participation in the CWG was part of the preparation for the Asian Games.
“Before leaving for the CWG, we did not expect any medal but now is the time for players to perform, qualify for the Olympic Games by bagging a medal in the Asian Games.”
Pakistan begin the last leg of their preparations in Islamabad. The team will stop in Kuala Lumpur next month to play two matches against Malaysia before landing in Guangzhou where they meet hosts China in a practice game ahead of the quadrennial spectacle.
Islah wants PHF to deliver promises
The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) promised two years ago that their target was a gold medal in the Asian Games and, according to Olympian Islahuddin Siddique, it is time to deliver those promises.
“Two years ago, the PHF said they would prepare a solid team for the Asian Games and they are highly focused for the prestigious event,” Islah told PPI. “Now is the time the federation show what they did in that time period. They should’ve prepared a team for the Asian Games six months ahead of the event and let the team develop harmony in their game style and coordination. But the team is yet to be decided, when only 20 days are left for the Asian Games to start.”

Panda cubs to go on display

BEIJING - CHINA'S top panda breeding centre will send six panda cubs to the southern city of Guangzhou, where they will be displayed during the Asian Games next month, state press said on Monday.
Two female and four male panda cubs - all born in 2009 - will be sent before the end of the month to the Panyu Endangered Animal World in the Guangzhou suburbs, China National Radio reported.
Panyu is the site of the Asian Games Village, where up to 15,000 athletes and coaches from some 45 nations will reside during the Nov 12 to 27 event.
The pandas were born at the Wolong Panda Research Centre, China's top facility for the breeding of the endangered species, located in the southwestern province of Sichuan.
Giant pandas are among the world's most endangered species, with about 1,600 living in the wild and over 300 bred in captivity at zoos. They have a notoriously low libido, which has frustrated efforts to boost their numbers.
But in recent years dozens of pandas have been born in captivity, with at least 16 born in Wolong this year as of September, according to the state press. -- AFP

Hockey: Fatigue factor worries coach

Being the only team to play three high-profile tournaments back-toback has its drawbacks, but the Indian women's hockey team will have to rise above the fatigue factor as they assemble for the preparatory camp before the Asian Games in the Capital on Monday.

The Indian women's team heads to Asian Games after playing the World Cup and Commonwealth Games in a short span.
No other team has had a schedule with the World Cup, Commonwealth Games (CWG) and the Asian Games in quick succession but the Guangzhou event will provide Sandeep Somesh's wards an opportunity at a medal. "So little time between tournaments is not an ideal situation," head coach Somesh told MAIL TODAY before he left for the Capital.
"It neither gives the girls time for rest nor does it give me enough time to work on areas that need attention." The camp will be on till the players leave for China, most probably on November 5.
"I think about 22 players have been called for the camp and they will report tomorrow. "We plan to work on fast transfer of the ball from defence to attack, switching flanks, penalty corners and converting chances which have often let us down recently," the former India international said. "Let's see what we can achieve in 10 days."
India finished ninth at the World Cup and fifth at the CWG, where a blooper over goal difference resulted in India missing out on a semi-final berth.
India went into their final league game against South Africa, thinking they needed a victory with a margin of seven goals to advance. They were 3-0 after the first-half, but when the opposition reduced the margin at the start of the second half, the Indian heads dropped.
It was only after the match that the team management and players realised that they needed a win with a four-goal margin to make it to the last-four stage as every time they found the target, the South African goal difference also took a hit.
As such, they needed just one goal in the second period while keeping a clean sheet. Somesh went on record to say that had they known the actual situation, they would have played differently.

Asian sides ready to rumble in Singapore

Six Asian women’s rugby national teams will gather in Singapore in November to compete in the region's major annual 7s competition.
Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia (pictured), India, Hong Kong and Japan will compete for the first ever international women's title at the SCC 7s - a major competition in the region that has to now focused on women's club sides.
With the Asian Games in China on the horizon, a number of the sides are putting together their final preparations for the bigger event later in the month.
It's the first time a women's international competition has been held at the SCC 7s where over 7,000 fans are expected to attend with a host of major faces from the men's game also competing.
Indonesia and Malaysia are two of the newer sides on the international scene with India too having emerged as competitors on the 7s circuit in the last year.
Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan are more established in the women's game - all three attempted to qualify for the Women's Rugby World Cup this year - and the Japanese have just recently returned from a UK tour which was organised in an effort to increase the standards of their elite players.
Those three sides will be favourites to fill the top three spots at the SCC event.
The teams will be split into two pools of three on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 November.
Pool games will be played on Friday, with the Cup semis and bowl final taking place in the Saturday morning session. The plate and cup finals will be part of the climax of Saturday's action.
Of the teams competing - all but Indonesia competed at the Asian 7s held earlier this summer in China - where the Chinese were crowned champions.

Greenshirts target gold in Asian Games

The Pakistan hockey team are ready for a change in fortunes after their poor showing at the World Cup and the Commonwealth Games. PHOTO: AFP
KARACHI: The Pakistan hockey team start their campaign at next month’s Asian Games with two aims in mind – a gold medal and victory against arch-rivals India.
Pakistan captain Zeeshan Ashraf believes his side badly need a gold medal in the quadrennial event that will be held in Guangzhou, China, in order to help them qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
“The Asian Games is the most important assignment for us this year, and we’re training and practising for months now just to keep our focus on it,” Ashraf told The Express Tribune. “We’re aware of its importance because only a gold medal can take us to the Olympics. We’ll go all out to win as we can’t even afford to settle with a silver medal.”
Pakistan finished at an unimpressive sixth position in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games and finished last in the 12-team World Cup also staged in New Delhi. “We’re hoping to reverse our fortunes on this different venue,” said Ashraf, before adding that his team are also looking to settle the score with India. “We lost to India in the World Cup and then in the Games, but now we’re eying our revenge. We always want to put in extra effort against them as a defeat really hurts.”
Pakistan are tied with India in Group B that also includes Japan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong while South Korea, Malaysia, China, Singapore and Oman are placed in Group A for the competition. Ashraf said that despite the absence of European teams and World Champions Australia, the event will be equally tough as the Commonwealth Games.
‘Abbas will lift team’
Ashraf welcomed the return of Sohail Abbas in the event’s training camp, and said that the short-corner specialist will boost the team’s chances in the event. “There are no doubts on Abbas’ calibre and his presence will definitely benefit the team. Hopefully, he’s in good form.”
Meanwhile, the captain said the team will be working to overcome their weaknesses exposed in the Games in the training camp that starts tomorrow in Islamabad. “It will be a short camp so we’ll be working on our weaknesses like glitches in goal conversion and defence.”

Knives, guns on Asian Games security agenda

Zheng Zehui
Editor's Note:
The 2010 Asian Games will be held from November 10 to November 17 in Guangzhou, the capital of South China's Guangdong Province. As with the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, security around the city is strengthened. What measures are the Guangdong police taking to ensure orders during the Games? How can Guangdong manage its problems with drugs and guns, caused by the province's proximity to Hong Kong and Macao? People's Daily Online (PO) talked to Zheng Zehui(Zheng), head of the Public Security Management Office of Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department.
PO: What's the current security situation in Guangdong?
Zheng: Guangdong has a very large economy. The huge flow of people, goods and capital has also led to the complex security situation in the province.
Netizens are very concerned about the security situation in Guangdong, and some are saying there are many problems with the situation in the province. Visitors today will be happy with the improvement of social order in Guangdong.
PO: There has been a nationwide anti-obscenity campaign recently. Have measures been taken in Guangdong?
Zheng: We have intensified efforts to crack down on social evils through various methods over the past two years.
The places that might be involved are examined. Dance halls and saunas have been thoroughly searched and improved. They cannot restore operation until they have met our requirements.
Meanwhile, we've intensified unannounced visits, not only by the media but also public security departments, and verification measures as well. If two unannounced visits both find problems, the matter will be handled by public security.
We've also increased the investigation of prostitution and gambling by officers from other departments, which is a strong deterrent for criminals, and are more vigorously prosecuting cases, especially those involving organized or forced prostitution.
We've strengthened our internal supervision, severely punishing police officers who leak information to these groups.
PO: Many netizens are also concerned about the explosive and gun problems. Some time ago, a traffic policeman making a highway stop was shot dead by the driver. What do you think of this incident?
Zheng: We have attached a lot of importance to this work.
Guangdong's situation is quite special. It is close to Hong Kong and Macao and there is regular cross-border traffic, which results in the influx of firearms to Guangdong. Whether they come from Hong Kong and Macao or other places, it is a serious problem.
This year, we have set up a working interdepartmental group focused on the investigation of explosives and firearms.
We have listed some special cases involving gun and explosive as supervised cases which must be solved before a deadline. The trail of illegal firearms and explosives must be sniffed out. An investigation can expose a stash of weapons and many clues.
We have listed six areas as the key areas for explosives and firearms searches in Guangdong.
Then there is the fight online. Online transactions and distribution of information empower many criminal activities.
We have found a number of online firearms transactions, explosives sales and websites teaching how to make ex-plosives. Cases involving firearms this year have decreased by 20.2 percent.

PO: Guangzhou is considering adopting a ID registration system for the purchase of knives during the Asian Games. Will it be implemented across the whole province?
Zheng: No, only in Guangzhou and the main purpose is to guarantee a peaceful and successful Asian Games.
The real-name registration is mainly aimed at minors and persons with mental disorder or abnormal behavior.
For an ordinary person, it is easy to judge who is a minor. It can be confirmed by his ID card. It is necessary to report people with mental disorders according to individual feelings. With a timely report, we can follow the case up.
It is also easy to spot abnormal behavior. This measure is still being studied by the city government and has not been officially implemented.
PO: Guangdong has recently changed temporary resident permits issued to migrant workers into regular residence permits. Is there a substantive difference?
Zheng: Many people do not understand this and think it is just a new name. In fact, the change reflects that the floating population is now settling down to become permanent residents.
To some degree, it has affirmed the contributions made by migrant workers to the economic and social development in Guangdong over the years.
We also do our best to let the majority of the floating population enjoy the public services as much as possible, so it is not just a difference in concept. In essence, it is more human-centered.
The temporary residence permit system stressed the compulsory regulations. Migrant workers without a permit were sometimes detained. So they were forced to apply for a permit.
Now we are attracting the majority of the floating population to apply for permits, initially through a series of preferential policies. With the permit, they can enjoy the benefits of social services. So a lot of migrants are actively applying for permits.
The system has been being tried out in Shenzhen since 2008, and was implemented across the province at the start of this year.
By now, over 21 million migrants have obtained residence permits all over the province.
Currently, over 70 percent of the floating population hold permits and by the end of this year, this rate will exceed 90 percent.
PO: What benefits does this bring for public security?
Zheng: People are managed by the application of residence permits. Our public security department will check the correctness of gathered information.
By using the residence permits, our management system implements interconnected management of the whole province.
Whenever a permit holder changes his place of residence, he or she should refresh his or her card at our local pub-lic security organization.
As the card contains a chip and an erasable record bar, people can update their addresses easily whenever and wherever they move.
When someone leaves Guangdong, we can temporarily suspend his card when he or she goes back to his home town and activate it after he or she comes back.
By using these technologies, we can track the dynamics of the floating population within the province. Thus we have a full record.
Second, people are managed by their rented apartments. We tie all the rental apartments in the province with the IDs. Namely, people who live in the rented apartment should match our collected information.
Third, people are managed by enterprises. We have developed a system called the "Enterprise Employment System."
After recruiting someone, enterprises should report his or her information to the public security department. Then we can check whether he or she is a wanted person to guarantee the security of the enterprise.

Kelly in buoyant mood for Asiad after good showing in LPGA meet

MALAYSIA’s top amateur Kelly Tan will be going to the Guangzhou Asian Games next month with a renewed sense of belief after having a good run in the LPGA Malaysia.
Kelly, who will turn 17 on Wednesday, finished in 32nd spot after posting a three-day total of 216 to be the Malaysian best finisher in the tournament.
“I will head to Guangzhou for the Asiad after this, followed by the Greg Norman Junior Masters in Australia (December). What will be my target in Guangzhou? To get a medal, of course,” said a confident Kelly.
Kelly carded a one-over 72 in the final round yesterday with par on eight of her first nine holes. But her nerves got the better of her on the ninth and she sank a double bogey.
Top of the pack: Winner Kang Jimin (centre) posing for the camera together with runner-up Julie Inkster (right) and Malaysia’s best finisher Kelly Tan.
“I was a bit nervous, it was a bit tricky and I double bogeyed. Later on the 10th, I told myself to do the same thing like the I did on the previous day. I didn’t change much to my game and I managed a couple of birdies afterward,” she said.
Kelly was a figure of consistency in the tournament, having shot 71 and 73 in the first two rounds. However, she felt that she could have done better given the great condition at the course.
“I learned a lot from the pros during the tournament. They stayed cool even after making mistakes and I will take that aspect into my game,” she said.
“I will work on my drive, too, because I couldn’t get a lot of distance right now, maybe because I lack the strength.
“Definitely that will be one of the key areas that I have to work on more because all the other girls here hit longer than me.”
As an amateur, Kelly is not eligible to take home the prize money of about US$12,000 for sharing 32nd spot with eight others unless she declares herself turning pro on the same day.
But despite the lure of the handsome prize money, Kelly said that she was not ready yet to turn professional.
“Not so soon. At least not until I’m hitting 62 consistently on the course. I think my game will tell me when I can turn pro,” she said.
