KUALA LUMPUR: It was another heartbreak for national No. 4 Mohd Asyraf Azan as he was left out of the squash team for the Guangzhou Asian Games.

The Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) again chose youngster Ivan Yuen in favour of Asyraf as they did for the just concluded Delhi Commonwealth Games.
The 22-year-old Asyraf is ranked higher at No. 58 in the world than 20-year-old Ivan, who is in 78th spot.
“I deserve a place in the Asian Games as I am ranked higher than Ivan,” said a disappointed Asyraf.
“Furthermore, I also made it to the World Open in Saudi Arabia in December from a qualifying tournament in St George Hills, England, last month,” he said.
Two-time Asian champion and world no. 13 Mohd Azlan Iskandar will spearhead Malaysia’s challenge in the Asiad men’s competitions. The other members of the men’s team are Ong Beng Hee and Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan.
Azlan and Beng Hee, who won the gold in 2002 Busan and 2006 Doha, will feature in the individual events.
There are four gold medals from individual and team events for both men and women.
Five-time world champion and Delhi Commonwealth Games gold medallist Nicol David will be gunning a third Asiad individual gold medal.
The Penangite was the champion in 1998 (Bangkok) and in 2006 (Doha). She took silver in 2002 (Busan).
Nicol and national No. 2 Low Wee Wern will feature in the individual event. The other members of the team are Delia Arnold and Sharon Wee.
Peter Chee has been named as the team manager and the coaches are Ajaz Azmat and the Soyza brothers Allan and Aaron.

Men’s squash team for Asian Games

Pictograms of Olympic sports - SquashImage via Wikipedia
A last ditch effort to send a team for the Asian Games saw  light when the Sri Lanka Squash Federation (SLSF) officials campaigned vigorously for allocation of slots for its players. The matter was pursued with the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka, following the NOC rejection to accommodate squash players due to delayed submission of nominations.
The Squash Federation will now send a three member men’s team with a manager and a coach. The team comprises of the three top ranked players in Navin Samarasinghe, Gihan Suwaris and Binura Jayasuriya while Tissa Jayasuriya will be the manager.
According to an NOC official, the SLSF had contacted the Asian Squash Federation (ASF) and managed to persuade them to give Sri Lanka the opportunity to field a squash team. This request met with success and Sri Lanka will now send a men’s team only.
However, as no financial assistance was allotted by the NOC for squash, the players have been asked to source their own funds for travel. The issue arose due to the delay of the SLSF to send in the names before the closing date that fell on June 30.

Asian Games My Priority, Says Mohd Azlan

KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 (Bernama) -- Newly-crowned Malaysian Open men's champion Mohd Azlan Iskandar has set his sights on the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, which will be held in November.

"This year will be a busy year and the Asian Games will once again, be my priority," said the 28-year-old Sarawakian.

For the first time, the Asian Games offers four gold medals in squash, namely, two each (individual and team events) for the men and women category, respectively.

Mohd Azlan said it would be a daunting task for the athletes to deliver the four gold medal-target set by the National Sports Council (NSC).

"I hope my coach will be flown in by MSN (National Sports Council) to Malaysia from England to work with the team for a few weeks before the Asian Games.

"I think it will be really important because Asian Games will be held in China, so it doesn't make sense to train in Engand because the weather was completely different," the 18th world-ranked player in Professional Squash Association (PSA) told Bernama in an interview today.

Mohd Azlan, who is coached by Peter Genevar in London, described the last two weeks as a great achievement for him.

Before winning his third Malaysian Open title yesterday, Mohd Azlan won his first national title last week and on May 8, he won the 15th Asian Senior Championship in Chennai, India.

"It's been a good two weeks for me...this year, I won three title...the Asian Championship, national and Malaysian open. Hopefully, a few more tournaments," he said.

He returns to competition next month at the Hong Kong Open and will take the next five weeks to fine-tune his game at Bukit Jalil.

"My five weeks of trainning will continue in Bukit Jalil before the Hong Kong Open. I am skipping the Australian Open (Aug 8-15) in preparation for the competition," said Mohd Azlan.

The Hong Kong Open will be held from Aug 23 to 29.

"I think my form in the Asian Championship is getting better. I came to the tournament (Malaysian Open) half-way through my training programme.

"However, I still lack in a few things and I learn from every tournament," added Mohd Azlan.
