Asian nations to battle for 7s title

Up to 14 international rugby teams will compete this weekend at the Asian Women's 7s tournament in Guangzhou, China.

The hosts will be joined by top Asian nations such as Thailand, India, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore (pictured) at the competition where they will be among the favourites.
The event on July 24-25 is a warm-up event for the Asian Games in November which is being held in the same area.
At the last Asian Women’s 7s in 2009, China and Thailand contested the final with the Chinese, who are an emerging force at this level, coming out on top.
Women’s rugby 7s is a sport growing in popularity in Asia and major events like the Hong Kong 7s and the larger Asian games have been serving as great development platforms for new and fast developing sides.
China remain the powerhouses of the women’s 7s game in Asia with the team recently reaching the final of the Hong Kong where they lost out to a star studded Aussie Amazons team which contained members of the World Cup 7s winning Australia side.
