Sri Lanka’s leading amateur golfer and new Amateur Open Champion Mithun Perera’s ambition is to win a gold medal at the next Asian Games to be held in China. His father Nandasena Perera was also a leading golfer in Sri Lanka and narrowly missed winning the gold medal at the 1998 Asian Games. Nandasena was beaten on the sudden death play off after he was square at the end of the 18 holes.
“I remember this incident very well and my target from my young days is to win a gold medal at the Asian Games that my father failed so narrowly,” reminded Mithun Perera.
However, it won’t be easy for Mithun in China as it would be cold during that time of the year. Playing in cold conditions would hamper Mithun’s movements with fists going very gold and stiff.
However, Mithun’s ambition is so great that he has a series of tournaments to play before going to China.
He will be playing in a tournament in Singapore this month and the Asian Amateur too will be held in September.
Should Mithun Perera fare well in these tournaments then he would have gained enough confidence to perform well at the Asian Games in November.
Mithun Perera won the Sri Lanka Open Amateur title for the third time though not in successive years. He also received the green blaze along with the handsome trophies he won.
