PETALING JAYA: Terengganu hotshot Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin is the leading candidate for the Golden Boot award in the Super League with 15 goals from 22 matches.
The 24-year-old national striker leads the pack ahead of Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal of Selangor and Norsharul Idlan Talaha of Kelantan, who are both tied on 11 goals each.
Ashaari won his first full international cap with the senior team in the Merdeka Tournament against Afghanistan in 2008 when he scored a brace in the 6-0 win.
He is now back after a one-year absence and is in coach K. Rajagopal squad preparing for two major assignments this year – the Guangzhou Asian Games (Under-23) in November and Asean Suzuki Cup (senior) in December.
Ashaari first made his name in the domestic competition two years ago when he bagged nine goals for Terengganu in the Super League. In the same year when Terengganu hosted Sukma (Malaysia Games), he scored a total of 10 goals to help his home state win the gold medal.
Although left out from the international scene last year, he did well to score 22 goals for the Turtles in domestic competitions.
Terengganu, who have only a mathematical chance to win the Super League title, will be banking on Mohd Ashaari for goals in their remaining fixtures.
Defending champions Selangor lead the 14-team standings on 54 points from 22 matches followed by Kelantan (49) and Terengganu (44).
The other leading scorers in the competition are Selangor’s Mohd Safee Sali and Kedah’s Azlan Ismail, who have 10 goals each.
