Asian Games: Singapore rider in final



GUANGZHOU: Team Singapore's Catherine Chew has qualified for the Jumping Individual Equestrian final, to be held on Wednesday afternoon.

The 21 year old finished in 12th place earlier and will compete against 24 other riders from 2pm.

In hockey, Malaysia's women's team has finished fifth overall after beating Thailand 3-nil early Wednesday.

The bronze medal playoff between Japan and India will take place at 2pm Wednesday, while the battle for the gold medal between China and South Korea will be held later, at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the men's basketball quarterfinal matches take place on Wednesday and would be broadcast live on Channel 5. Powerhouse Philippines is the only ASEAN country remaining in the last eight teams.

They will meet Korea at 1pm on Wednesday to fight for a place in the semi-finals.

In athletics, four gold-medal events are set to take place. They include the women's pole vault, men's long jump and discus throw.

The highlight of the event would likely be the Men's 110 metre Hurdles final, featuring Chinese superster Liu Xiang.

More than 70,000 spectators are expected to fill the Aoti Stadium for the 7.45pm race on Wednesday, which would be broadcast live on Channel 5.

In diving, two gold medals are at stake at the finals of the Men's and Women's 1 metre springboard events.

Lastly in waterpolo, Singapore will face Hong Kong at 4pm on Wednsday to determine a placement between the fifth and eighth ranking.
