VETERAN Merculio Ramos clinched a slot in the national team competing in the Guangzhou Asian Games in November after ruling the 150-kilometer massed start race yesterday that ended the unified cycling trials in Tagaytay.
Showing up well-prepared for the race, Ramos, 32, towed the pack in the final 35 kilometers slots and crossed the finish line in 3:55:06.14, four seconds faster than second placer Renato Sembrano. Ramos caught up with the breakaway group in Balayan, Batangas, and never eased up in the chase for Asiad slots.
"Hinila ko na sila, masyadong mabagal. Ensayado naman ako," said Ramos.
Completing the four-man for the road race event were Sherwin Carrera who finished third and Baler Ravina who salvaged fourth.
In all, 39 riders secured slots in the national team in the five-day unified trials held by the PhilCycling headed by Tagaytay Mayor Bambol Tolentino and Integrated Cycling President Arnulfo Taberdo and backed by Koten.
A total of 27 riders earned the right to represent the country in track events, five clinched mountain bike slots while three others secured berths in the road race individual time trial event.
