Vijender gets Samsung Most Valued performance award

Boxer Vijender Singh was presented the ‘Most Valuable Performance' award by Samsung, at a felicitation function for Guangzhou Asian Games medallists here on Wednesday.
Olympic and World championship bronze medallist Vijender had brushed away the bad memories of losing the semifinals in the Commonwealth Games at home with a spectacular performance when he outclassed World champion Abbos Atoev of Uzbekistan 7-0 in the final in China.
Though his performance was chosen as the best among all the efforts by the Indian athletes, who had accounted for 64 medals including 14 gold, the panel of eminent sports journalists which had made the choice, commended the performances of Somdev Devvarman who won two golds, Ronjan Sodhi who won an elusive gold in shooting, Bajrang Lal Takhar who won the country's first gold in rowing apart from athlete Preeja Sreedharan for the gold in the 10,000 metres.
The MVP award carries a reward of Rs. 2.5 lakh worth of Samsung products. All the other athletes who had won medals in the Asian Games were also felicitated with different sizes of LCD television sets and mobile phones.
The Secretary-General of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Randhir Singh, appreciated Samsung's support for the Olympic movement, even as he praised the government for the fabulous support that helped bring good results in both the Commonwealth and Asian Games.
The President and CEO of Samsung South West Asia, Jung Soo Shin, said the celebration of the success of India's pride marked the culmination of a journey that had begun with the Samsung Sports Ratna programme.
