The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced Thursday the launch of an inter-province mechanism designed to handle foreign affairs during the upcoming Asian Games in southern Guangzhou city.

The mechanism requires foreign affairs offices in five south China provinces and one autonomous region - Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian and Hainan - to collaborate to handle affairs related to foreign nationals during the Asian Games and the Asian Para Games.

Vice foreign minister Song Tao said Thursday the proper handling of cases concerning foreign affairs or foreign nationals is of vital importance to the successful hosting of the two games.

To be held in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, the Asian Games will open on Nov. 12. During the 15-day Games, a total of 10,156 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions will compete in 476 events in 42 sports categories. The Asian Para Games will start on Dec. 12.
