Athletics selection for Asian Games begins

KATHMANDU, July 24: Baliram Chaudhary of Armed Police Force secured the first position in men´s 100m sprint on Saturday during the preliminary selection of athletics for the 16th Asian Games, Guangzhou.



Chaudhary clocked 11.14 seconds during the selection at the Dasharath Stadium. Chaudhary´s counterpart Bimal Basnet from Pokhara completed the sprint in 11.27 seconds.


Nepal Police Club (NPC)´s sprinter Chandra Kala Thapa took 13.19 seconds to win women´s 100m while her competitor Keshari Chaudhary from the same club remained 0.16 seconds behind.

In women´s 400m, NPC´s Sabitri Nepali produced an upset for APF runner Pramila Rijal, who had represented the country in the 11th South Asian Games (SAG) and won gold in the Fifth National Games in the category. Nepali clocked 1 minute 0.90 seconds while Rijal took 1 minute 1.50 seconds.

Nepal Army´s Santa Bahadur Budha finished the sprint in 51.53 seconds to complete 400m in men´s category and stood ahead of NPC´s Ramprit Chaudhary.



Army´s Hari Kumar Rimal won the selection event of men´s 1,500m with a timing of three minutes 57.60 seconds while another Army man Motilal Chaudhary completed the race in 4 minutes 2.60 seconds.

In women´s 1,500m, Geeta Khatri of APF stood on top with a timing of 4 minutes 55.66 seconds. Brinda Shrestha clocked 5 minutes 3.15 seconds to stay behind Khatri.

National record holder Keshari Chaudhary of NPC leaped 1.55m in women´s high-jump.



Men´s and women´s events of 5,000m and 200m as well as men´s 110m hurdles and women´s triple-jump will take place on Sunday. Marathon will take place next Saturday.

According to chief athletics coach Narayan Yadav, altogether 12 athletes will be selected in the first round on the basis of performance. "We´ll publish the list of selected players next week after the completion of all events," said Yadav.
