Dr M V Shetty Trust Honours Gold Medalist Ashwini with Cash Award

Mangalore, Dec 30: Ashwini Chidananda Shetty, gold medalist in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games 2010 was felicitated at a programme held in Dr M V Shetty College campus in Vidyanagar here on Thursday December 30.
Dr M Ramgopal Shetty, founder secretary of Dr M V Shetty Trust handed over cheque of Rs 50,000 to Ashwini on the occasion.
Superintendent of police Subrahmanyeshwar Rao did the honours. Addressing the gathering Rao said that Ashwini has proven her mettle with her achievements despite the system in our country. It is not only the government that is reponsible for the present situation of sports in the country, the public too should come forward to demand sports amenities, he added.
Accepting the honour, Ashwini spoke in Hindi and said that she preferred Hindi as its the national language. She said that in her initial days she was scared of travelling far from home. She did not lose hopes even after going through difficulties and failures during the initial 3-4 years.
"My advise to other sportspersons is that courage and confidence will always help a lot in achieving your goals," she said, adding that having achieved her great success in Asiad and Commonwealth Games, her next target is Olympics. She owed her success to her parents and her coach.
The programme began with a prayer song by Dr M V Shetty College of Physiotherapy students. Carol D’Souza, lecturer, introduced Ashwini Shetty to the gathering. Dr M Ramgopal Shetty presided over the programme.
Prof B V Kathyayini, principal, Dr M V Shetty College of Nursing welcomed the gathering. Prof Susan Varghese, principal, Dr M V Shetty College of Physiotherapy, delivered the vote of thanks. Vaishali compered the programme.
