MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Olympic Committee spokesman Joey Romasanta said on Tuesday the Olympic body would continue pushing for the unification race that would determine the country’s cyclists for the 2010 Asian Games even after POC-recognized PhilCycling group ousted its leader, Arnulfo Taberdo.
The faction of Taberdo and PhilCycling president Abraham Tolentino agreed to hold a unification race on July 19 to 25 to determine the members of the national team to represent the country in the Guangzhou Asiad.
The POC was informed on Monday that Ricky Cruz, a cycling patron and member of the board, has replaced Taberdo as the group’s head.
Taberdo is the other signatory in the memorandum of agreement also signed by Tolentino for the unity race to push through in Subic (road and mountain bike) and at the Amoranto Velodrome (track).
Dismayed over the development, the Asian Games chef de mission feared the cancellation of the race but promised to exert efforts in ensuring that Filipino riders would be able to compete in the Nov. 12 to 27 Asiad.
