NTA pick preliminary Asiad squad

KATHMANDU: Nepal Taekwondo Association (NTA) today selected the 24-member preliminary squad for the 16th Asian Games slated for Guangzhou from November 12 to 27.

Two finalists in each of the six weight categories in both the men’s and women’s sections were selected for the second phase of the selection. One of the two losing semi-finalists in each of the 12 weight categories — six each in men and women’s sections — will be added to the squad later on, informed the Nepal Taekwondo Association.

Apart from the 36 players, six other players who won medals in the 11th South Asian Games in Dhaka will compete in the second phase of selection. Deepak Bista and Ayesha Shakya had won gold, Manita Shahi and Kumar Manandhar the silver and Yan Kumari Chaulagain and Dan Bahadur Airee the bronze medals in Dhaka Games.

However, the record four-time gold medallist Bista is almost certain to miss the Asian Games following his recent surgery to his injured knee. Nepal will field one player each in six weight categories in both the men and women’s sections.
