IBF secetary general PK Muralidharan Raja said pugilists who impress at the Nationals will make their way into the 40-probable list core group in place of those who do not perform upto the mark.
"We want to churn out best boxers for CWG and Asian Games. It's about winning medals for India. The core group will be reviewed after the tournament. The Nationals will provide young boxers a chance to impress upon the selectors and find a place in the core group," Raja told reporters.
"The entire selection committee headed by OP Bhardwaj will witness all the bouts. Even national coach GS Sandhu will also be present," he said.
"Core group identifies potential boxers but if some young boxers comes up with impressive performance in the National, he will be included in the core group," Raja added.
With the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in Guangzhou, China round the corner and only a month separating the two mega events, Raja said the Nationals will provide them the opportunity to select standby boxers in case of any eventuality.
"Boxing is a injury-prone game, so we have to anticipate and will have to keep our options open. There is only a month's gap between the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games and that's a problem. If a boxer sustains any injury there is very little recovery time," he said.
Asked whether the same set of boxers, who will participate in Commonwealth Games, will be sent to China for the November 12-27 Asian Games, Raja said, "It is upto the selection committee to look into the issue."
The IBF secretary general also informed that the final selection trial for the October 3 to 14 Commonwealth Games will be conducted next month.
"CWG selection trial will be separate. The final selection trial will be in the third or fourth week of August at NIS, Patiala," Raja said.
Interestingly, IBF had made it mandatory for each boxers in the core group to participate in the Nationals, barring those who are nursing injuries.
Top boxers like Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh, Olympian Jitender Kumar (56kg) and former world youth champion Thokchom Nanao Singh (49kg) will give the tournament a miss because of injuries.
However, the tournament does have its share of stars with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Akhil Kumar, Asian champion Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Commonwealth champions Jai Bhagwan (60kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg) and Paramjeet Samota (91kg) and South Asian Games gold medallist Chhote Lal Yadav confirming their participation.
Akhil will be participating in the 60kg category and not his preferred 56kg division as he has put on weight after an injury.
He, however, hinted that he would have preferred to skip the event as he has just recovered from an injury and not in his full shape.
"Just after recovering from a wrist injury, last month I had a knee problem for which doctors advised me three weeks rest. I just had light training during that period so I had put on little weight. Just 10 days back I came to know that participation in Nationals is compulsory, so I had very little time to shed weight, so I will compete in the 60kg," Akhil said.
"I just came here to participate because it is mandatory. Frankly speaking, I am not eyeing medals here. My aim is to play the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games," he said.
