Exclusion of football team from Asian Games widely criticized

Old PFF logoImage via Wikipedia
ISLAMABAD, Jul 29: Former national football captain Muhammad Naveed Chaudhry Thursday criticised the decision of Pakistan Olympic Association not to include football team in the Pakistan contingent for the coming November’s 16th Asian Games.
He also took to task the officials of Pakistan Football Federation for the recent poor performances of the national team, leading to the difficult decision by POA to exclude football from the Asiad.
“The exclusion of football team from the Asiad would make a negative impact on the team and will not boost the morale of the players”, he said. Naveed recalled that the performance of the team was not at all bad in the 15th Asian Games in 2006 at Doha (Qatar) though it narrowly lost its matches against North Korea and Japan.
Besides, he said, Pakistan team secured gold medal in South Asian Games in 2006 when Salman Sharida of Bahrain was the Coach. He said that departure of Sharida after differences with the PFF resulted in a string of poor performances by the national side after 2006 as the Federation failed to find another coach of his calibre.
Naveed who was the captain of the national team in 1986 in the Asian Games at Seoul (South Korea) said that Pakistan team was now ranked last among 8 countries of South Asia, languishing behind countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and India. He said that despite the grant of Rs 20 million by the government, the team couldn’t produce good enough results to secure a berth in the Asian Games.
He said PFF officials had made a laughing stock of themselves. “These officials issued a statement that Pakistan could qualify for the World Cup in 2022. Now if you cannot even figure in the Asian Games, how come you boast of qualifying for World Cup”.

No seeding in Asian Games – Tolentino

INTEGRATED Cycling Federation of the Philippines (PhilCycling) President and Tagaytay City Mayor Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino clarified that there would be no seeded cyclists for the Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Reacting on a report that there are two cyclists who could be seeded in the quadrennial meet, Tolentino told The Manila Times Friday that it is not fair to all cyclists who sacrificed a lot if he will allow an “instant entry” to the RP cycling team.

“Well anyone can be included in the line-up but if they don’t proceed to the process of qualification, so why I issue license on them?” said Tolentino, also the secretary general of National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

“That’s why we have an Asian Games qualifying race,” said Tolentino, referring to the recently concluded track events of National Cycling Unification in Amoranto Veledrome and next week’s road race and mountain bike in Tagaytay City.

“It would not be fair to everybody if I will allow it.”

The two cyclists identified as Filipino-American Jeremy Moore and two-time Southeast Asian Games gold winner (2005 and 2007) Alfie Catalan may possibly become seeded, according to Col. Alberto Taberdo of the other cycling group.

But Tolentino, who is recognized by the Union Cycliste International (UCI) and Asian Cycling Confederation, has turned down the idea.

“Fil-Australian Apryl Eippinger came from Australia just to qualify, so I’m hoping other riders would also realize the importance of this qualification race,” he said.

So far, there are already 15 qualified cyclists for the Asian Games.

Nilo Estayo, Reinhard Gorantes and George Oconer will comprise the Men’s Olympic Sprint; Reinhard Gorantes, Lloyd Lucien Reynante, Mark Julius Bonzo and John Mier will carry the torch in the 4-kilometer Individual Time Trial (ITT) and Men’s Team Pursuit.

Lady riders Apryl Eppinger, Maritess Bitbit and Annalisa Dysangco took the women’s slots as they are adjuged the bests in the 500-meter ITT, 3-km Individual Pursuit and Points Race.

Others are Warren Davadilla, Arnold Marcelo, Jan Paul Morales, Tomas Martinez and Ronnel Hualda.

Ali hopes more of his youngsters make the next step

Several youngsters have been promoted to the senior squad from Mahdi Ali's Under 23 side. Ryan Carter / The National
Mahdi Ali, the UAE Olympic football team coach, believes the Under 23 Gulf Cup will provide an ideal platform for his side’s preparations for the Asian Games in Guangdong, China, from November 12 to 27.

Ali’s side, making their debut in the second staging of the championship, face Saudi Arabia, the defending champions, tonight (KO 9pm) in Group B at the Aspire Academy stadium in Doha, Qatar.

“Our main task is to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, and this type of competition will surely help us in our preparation,” said Ali, who made the nation proud by leading the UAE to the last eight in the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt last year.

“It is not only a good platform for us, but the competition is designed to provide all the Gulf teams with an equal opportunity. The timing is good and all teams have come after their training camps abroad. It is a good trial for all the players.”

Ali may not be able to pick his best players for the Asian Games as some of top prospects have been drafted in to the senior squad preparing for the 20th Gulf Cup in Yemen, from November 22 to December 4.

Hamdan al Kamali, the U20 captain, along with Ahmed Khalil, the 2008 Asian Youth Player of the Year, Yousif Abdelrahman, Sultan al Minhali, Theyab Awana, Amer Abdulrahman, Mohammed Fayez and Ali Mabkhout have all played for the senior side.

Obviously I would like to have all those players in my squad, but they have made the grade and now have a better role to play in the senior squad,” said Ali. “I am quite satisfied with the players with whom I am working with. They have shown remarkable improvement and have the potential to follow in the footsteps of those who have made it to the senior team. These boys have been together for more than a year and this tournament is a good test for them as well as a good opportunity for me to see how they have progressed. The first game is always important and full points from it will give us a chance to reach the last four after Saudi Arabia and Kuwait played out a draw [in their opener on Wednesday]. They are all pretty good sides but we will go with the idea of winning this first game.”

Ali’s squad arrived in Qatar direct from a three-week camp in Nuremburg, Germany.

Oman, who top Group A after a crushing 2-0 win over Qatar in their opening game, face Bahrain tonight (KO 6.30pm). They head and need only a draw to secure a place in the semi-finals to be played on August 4.

In the Pro League, Abdulsalam Jumaa, the Al Jazira defender, has been ruled out for three months following groin surgery.

The 31-year-old aggravated a long-standing problem during the club’s training camp in Austria and it was deemed serious enough to require an operation.

PSC chair says P25M needed for Guangzhou

Philippine Sports CommissionImage via Wikipedia
THE government could be spending P25 million for the Filipino athletes’ participation in the sixth Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November.

This was the assessment made by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Richie Garcia after meeting with Asian Games chief of mission Joey Romasanta on Wednesday.
“They came up with budget proposals of the different items like airfare, competition uniforms and parade uniforms,” said Garcia, who is barely two weeks on the job as PSC chief.
“Roughly based on the figures, it will tantamount to something like P25 million,” he added.
Garcia said his predecessor Harry Angping earmarked P30 million for the country’s stint in the quadrennial meet set from November 12 to 27.
Romasanta, also the spokesman of the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), earlier said he expected the delegation to Guangzhou to exceed 230 athletes.
And with P30 million, Garcia said money will no longer be a problem for the games.
“Nakita naman namin na meron talagang P30 million na earmarked for the Asian Games participation,” he said. “So with a budget of P30 million, apparently wala nang problema even if we have 200-plus athletes on the team.”
The 64-year-old Garcia said that although the Macapagal administration has used up most of the entire government’s budget—prompting him to knock at the door of the Philippine Amusement  and Gaming Corp.’s door for additional funds—it was rather different at the PSC.
The PSC has the money-fund for the Guangzhou campaign and Romasanta and the rest of the Asian Games working committee are now just waiting for the final list of athletes from the national sports associations.
The joint task force for the Asian Games is composed of PSC commissioner Chito Loyzaga, finance head Merly Ibay and transportation head Boy Dinglasan of the PSC, and Romasanta, Moying Martelino and Dr. Benjamen Espiritu on the POC side.

Asian Games

KARACHI: In a bid to avoid a World Cup-like disaster, Pakistan’s hockey officials are looking to ensure that their players peak just at the right time to be able to take a successful shot at the Asian Games crown in Guangzhou, China, this November.
Pakistan flopped miserably at the World Cup in Delhi last March, finishing last in the 12-nation spectacle. It was the worst-ever performance from the most successful nation in World Cup history and later experts blamed that the national team players got burnt out during the lead up to the World Cup and were unable to give their best in the quadrennial tournament.
“We will ensure that Pakistan hockey doesn’t have to go through similar disappointment again,” Asif Bajwa, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) secretary told ‘The News’. “Our coaches have worked out a plan that will ensure that our team will peak just at the right time to give its best in the Asian Games,” stressed Bajwa, a former Olympian.
Though Pakistan will feature in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October before the Asian Games, PHF chiefs are focusing on the Chinese assignment.
Bajwa said that Pakistan will shield their players from the risk of a burnout during the Commonwealth Games by easing their workload during the event.
“For us, Asian Games is now the most important event of the year,” said Bajwa. “We will compete in the Commonwealth Games but will ensure that our boys do not get exhausted there. They will be played in a way that their best comes at the Asian Games.”
Bajwa said that Pakistan’s new chief coach — Michel van den Heuvel — has chalked out a comprehensive strategy to get the best out of the team in Guangzhou.
“Our coach is fully aware that Asian Games is an event of immense importance for Pakistan and has planned the team’s strategy accordingly. We are sure that the team will exhibit marked improvement in China.”
Van den Heuvel, a former Dutch national coach, will supervise a series of training camps in Pakistan and aboard in a bid to raise a strong team for the Asian Games. Pakistan are hoping to end their title drought by regaining the Asian crown this year.
He has roped in a Dutch trainer to join him at the first phase of the training that will be held in Abbottabad from August 12-26. Pakistan will then travel to Van den Heuvel’s homeland to train there from September 1-20 ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
The national players will get a one-week break after the Delhi assignment before reassembling in Lahore to prepare for the Asian Games.

Top athletes stay away from Asian meet

The Asian All-Star athletic meet is supposed to be for the ‘cream' of the continent. It rarely turns out to be so in practice. The one to be held at the newly-opened, remodelled Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Thursday and Friday will at best provide an opportunity to assess the preparedness of the Indian athletes in facing the challenge of competing at the highest level in the Commonwealth Games in October.
Only into its third edition, the meet has once again attracted very few top athletes of Asia. China has entered just three athletes.
The Chinese were reportedly getting ready for the National championships that would form the selection trials for the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.
From the Indian viewpoint, the progress made by the athletes since mid-June will be keenly followed, with particular focus on the woman quarter-milers who were training in Ukraine, triple jumper Renjith Maheswary and shot putters Om Prakash Singh and Saurabh Vij.
All of them are being counted as possible medal contenders in the Commonwealth Games and this meet offers them another platform to build on their reputations and current form.
The US-based Indian discus thrower Vikas Gowda, and Om Prakash Singh, who had been training in Finland were expected to participate, though there could be no final confirmation about their arrival here.
Official information was hard to get on the eve of the meet as hundreds of policemen guarded an empty Nehru Stadium — barring the AFI and Commonwealth Games Organising Committee officials even as athletes, Indian and foreign, trained at the nearby Thyagaraj Stadium, guarded only by a handful of security men!
Gowda will not have the company of Asian record holder Ehsan Hadadi or his Iranian teammate Mohammad Samimi, both having pulled out at the last moment.
In men's shot put, Om Prakash Singh, the Asian champion, has been showing a fluctuating form, with 19.58 in Pune, 19.80 in Bangalore, 18.45 in Chennai and 19.12 in Lapinlahti, Finland, just ten days ago.
No consistency
In a majority of the events, the Indian athletes have had no consistency through the season so far and it is time they showed their capabilities even if the field here is ordinary.
The lack of quality entries had forced the AFI to have a re-think on hosting this meet. Eventually, the home athletes would fill in the majority of the slots, with four to five of them completing the line-ups in many events.
The leading male quarter-miler, Shakeh Mortaja is not competing while K. M. Binu will have the chance to show that he could be a contender for an individual berth in the Indian team for the Asian Games.
Star-cast
Asian champion Sajad Moradi of Iran, originally entered in the 800 metres, has withdrawn, making it easier for the Indians, among whom Prakash Varma and Pankaj Dimri are the men in form.
Among the younger Indians, the performance of Gayathri Govindaraj, following her feats in the recent World junior championships in Moncton, Canada, will be eagerly followed.
The 19-year-old Tamil Nadu girl made the finals in the 100m hurdles and triple jump there. Earlier she had achieved a personal best 13.58m while coming second in triple jump in the Asian junior championships in Hanoi.
The presence of a few top-level Kazakh and Uzbek woman athletes should give the meet the much-need boost in terms of star-cast. Asian Games champion Guzel Khubbieva is there in the 100 metres and that could spur Indian H. M. Jyothi to greater heights.

Khalid vows to win a medal at Asian Games

Khalid has lined up an ambitious training regimen that will see him aim for glory in China at the Asian Games. The Emirati has moved his training base to Lake Garda in Italy.

Dubai: UAE sailing champion Adel Khalid has planned an ambitious training regimen that can eventually fetch him a medal at the Asian Games in China later this year.
"The plan is simple: my country needs a medal at a competition like the Asian Games and I want to be among the other athletes as a winner," Khalid told Gulf News.
The youngster has prepared an intensive three-month training schedule leading up to the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou, China from November 12-27.
"The schedule is meant to help me achieve certain goals leading up to the Asian Games," Khalid said.
"Though I have had very little support from the authorities, I have managed to keep myself in shape in the gym and on the European sailing circuit during the early part of the summer," he added.
"But I need a final programme leading up to the competition so that we can be sure of a medal at the Asian Games, after which we can build on the success and target a medal at the London Olympics in two years' time," the UAE sailor added.
Earlier this month, Khalid travelled to Scotland and participated in the Laser Radial class in a joint competition of the World and European Sailing Championships that attracted more than 100 sailors from all over the world.
"I ended 25th overall among these top sailors, and that gives me a lot of confidence for the future," he said.
However, what is lacking is the support that he needs from the authorities concerned to make this dream of a medal come true.
"I don't want to mince words on this but I need someone to come and support me. The UAE can be 85 per cent sure of a medal at the Asian Games. But I need to go through a proper training schedule leading to the games," Khalid said.
Tentative programme
The tentative programme will see him shift base to Lake Garda in Italy under a specialised programme set out by SailCoach, a sailing academy specialising in training champions.
Khalid has already met up with a top official from the UAE National Olympic Committee (UAENOC), who has promised a favourable response as regards his sponsorship.
"Shaikh Khalid Bin Zayed Bin Saqr Al Nahyan [president of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Association] has been very supportive of what I am doing. But now, maybe it is time the Dubai Sports Council (DSC) or any other body also needs to get involved," Khalid said.

Unlike Guangzhou, New Delhi still not prepared for media accreditation of CWG

The 16th Asian Games to be held in the Chinese city of Guangzhou will see July 31 as the close of media accreditation for the Games, but the manner in which media accreditation is being done for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG) is disappointing.

The 16th Asian Games, which is a part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), will take place in Guangzhou from November 12 to 27.
More than 10,000 accredited worldwide media are anticipated to cover the Games with more than three million spectators expected to attend.
Guangzhou is the second city in China to host the Games after Beijing in 1990.ver 14,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions are expected to compete in a total of 476 events in 42 sports.
World media wishing to receive accreditation for The 16th Asian Games can contact their respective National Olympic Committee and log onto the website: http://www.admail.net/url/761688/e566a4/ to use the Asian Games electronic accreditation system.
Media organizations from non-OCA member National Olympic Committee can receive application forms and the username/password for the accreditation website by sending an e-mail to: pressacr@gz2010.cn.
This includes non- right holding broadcasters, world news agencies, international sports federations, Asian sports federations and media/press originations in America, Oceania, Africa and Europe
The Editors Guild of India has noted with dismay the manner in which media accreditation is being done for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Four print media representatives including the President of the Sports Journalists Federation of India (SJFI) have resigned from the Commonwealth Games Media Accreditation Sub-Committee citing arbitariness in decision-making.
They raised questions in the manner in which accreditations have been granted to more than 300 organisations even before getting the approval of the committee.
Earlier on July 21, the host city of Guangzhou, greeted the media for from home and abroad heading for the Games Second World Press Briefing with hospitality.
Journalists from the world media giants were in the city for the Second World Press Briefing of the 16th Asian Games and to check on the progress of media services in advance of the November 12-27 Games.
Further on Monday, nearly 30 people representing 16 media organisations from Taiwan visited Guangzhou. They attended a briefing about the 16th Asian Games and toured around the Asian Games Town.
In India, the first phase of the accreditation process for covering the XIX Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi commenced on April 16, wherein the media organisations were requested to send their wish list for accreditation.
The deadline for it was May 7. The second phase commenced on June 7, and the final date for submission of the application form was July 7. but unlike the Chinese city of Guangzhou, no foreign media has still been invited to have a glance at the preparations ahead of the Delhi Commonwealth Games and no press briefing has been given to them.
On the other hand, Deputy Secretary General of the Guangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC) and Guangzhou Municipal Government Gu Shiyang briefed Taiwan's journalists on preparations for the Asian Games, who showed their interest in topics such as the marketing operations of the Games, "odd-even" traffic restrictions and Torch Relay.
The media representatives were very impressed by the post-Games use of the venues and their supporting facilities.
The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 15th Asian Games will open on October 28; the Main Press Centre (MPC) will open on November 1 and the Media Village will open on October 30.
Contrastingly, in Delhi, only marginal venue- Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and RK Khanna Tennis Stadium are said to be fully operational. So the opening up of media centers is a long way to go.
The remaing stadiums such as the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, Tyagaraj Sports Complex, Maj. Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Yamuna Sports Complex and Delhi University are still not ready.
Over 10,000 journalists from home and aboard will participate in the Guangzhou Asian Games, and 70 per cent of them will lodge at the Media Village.
"The media identity registration card for the Games will be sent in August. The International Broadcasting Centre will open on October 28 and the Main Press Centre on November 1," said Tianhua.
"During the Games, the journalists in the Main Press Centre could not only seek service of translation and interpretation including Korean, Japanese, English, Arabian, Russian, etc, but enjoy 17 services such as beauty salons, air ticket booking, banks, post offices, cybercafé, massage and tea art. Bars and cafes in the Main Press Centre and Media Village will provide 24 hours service," he added.
The Press Information Bureau gives accreditation to all the eligible journalists based in Delhi and its vicinity, and renews the accreditation on an annual basis.
For the first time, the process of submitting the applications for fresh accreditation or renewal for the year 2010 has been made completely online. But the question of providing translators to foreign journalists is still not on the cards.
The Organising Committee of the Asian Games has consulted with the relevant departments to provide services to the journalists from abroad, who need to buy insurance, pay taxes, interview Chinese athletes, open temporary bank accounts, hire employees in news reporting, rent rooms and rent workplace.
In contrast, India seems to be under immense pressure to complete all pending works on time before the Commonwealth Games. The Indian authorities have still not thought about what benefits should be provided to foreign media and how to make them feel at home.
The 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi is being touted as the biggest international sporting event to be hosted by India since the 1982 Delhi Asian Games.
Its success is being seen as the first step for India to bid for bigger events, but still New Delhi is not ready for it. (ANI)

POC to pick RP’s lineup for Asian Games

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippine Sports Commission is leaving it all to the Philippine Olympic Committee to decide who goes to the Asian Games in November based on its P30 million budget for the Nov. 12-27 competition in Guangzhou, China.
“The PSC has no say on the selection of the athletes. We just finance the Games as we see fit,” said PSC chair Richie Garcia after attending the POC general assembly on Wednesday.
The country sent 233 athletes, who won four golds overall, in the 2006 Doha Asiad.
The POC earlier hinted at sending about 300 this time with the inclusion of the dragon boat teams and the possible qualification of women’s softball and women’s basketball.
“We still have to meet with the POC as to the number of athletes who will go to the Games,” said Garcia, adding that funds for the Asiad campaign from the Department of Budget and Management have become available.
Meanwhile, Garcia said he would sit down with his board to choose the three commissioners to represent the government agency in the proposed POC-PSC permanent secretariat eyed to handle all preparations for future international campaigns.
“Rather than form a task force for every event, there is a proposal to create a permanent committee composed of three officials each from the POC and the PSC,” added Garcia.
“It’s better because we can continue the meetings, develop experience and be used to the mechanics and requirements involved.”
The PSC chief said he would not sit in the committee but would instead go “in and out” as needed.
The uniforms for the Asiad, according to Joseph, will be sponsored by 361, which also outfitted Team Philippines in the Laos Southeast Asian Games.

SHANGHAI - Guangdong province will kick off its week at Shanghai 2010 Expo on Wednesday, aiming to help tourists know more about the southern province, which is about to host the Asian Games in its capital, Guangzhou, in November.
Themed "Thrilling Asian Games, Green Guangdong", the celebration will last until August 1 and is mainly aimed at promoting the 2010 Asian Games.

As part of the celebration, the official mascots of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games - five sporty goats - will be on display along the popular shopping precinct of Nanjing Road starting Wednesday.
The mascots are named Le Yangyang, A Xiang, A He, A Ru and A Yi - each with their own character and style. Put together, their names make the Chinese phrase, xiang he ru yi le yangyang, which means "peace, harmony and great happiness, with everything going as you wish".
To entice more visitors to the province in November, the Guangdong Pavilion is giving away 10,000 free tickets to the Asian Games during the week.
The pavilion will also hold cultural performances, involving more than 1,200 artists.
"The presentation will show our cultural achievements and enable visitors to learn more about Guangdong folk customs," said Fang Jianhong, director of the department of culture in province.
Located in the China Joint Provincial Pavilion, the Guangdong Pavilion has attracted more than 2.2 million visitors since it opened on May 1.
The pavilion will be dismantled and moved back to the province after the Expo concludes.

Lack of Cash May Force National Side to Miss Asiad

Apparently, for some national teams, glory on the field doesn’t immediately translate to a free ride to the Asian Games.

The national women’s softball team qualified for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, after it finished fifth in the Asian Women’s Championship in Brunei in 2008. However, with limited finances, the team may be forced to miss the tournament in November.

Gugun Yudinar, president of the Indonesian Baseball and Softball Association (Perbasasi), told the Jakarta Globe on Tuesday that the federation had sent a letter to the Golden Indonesia Program (Prima), asking the group organizing the training camp for Asian Games-bound athletes to include women’s softball in its budget.

Prima and the Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) have said previously that only national teams they feel have a chance to bring home a medal will receive funding.

“Even though we can’t promise to win a medal as our opponents are too tough, I really hope our request would be granted because it is the first time our national team has qualified for the Asiad,” Gugun said.

Competing in the Asian Games, Gugun added, could jumpstart the development of women’s softball, especially with the country hosting the upcoming 2011 Southeast Asian Games.

The Perbasasi said its target in the 2011 SEA Games was to win the gold.

According to Gugun, Perbasasi officials are “open to looking for parties that can sponsor the team,” should Prima turn down the squad’s request.

Last year, the federation struggled to send the men’s baseball team to the Asian Championship in Tokyo and the men’s softball team to the World Championship in Saskatoon, Canada, because of financial constraints.

It still managed to participate in the tournaments though, after Andi Arif, owner of Smada baseball club in Lampung, shouldered more than half of the team’s budget.

Meanwhile, Perbasasi will have to set aside off-field problems this week, as the country hosts the Asean Women’s Softball Championship at Gelora Bung Karno stadium, Jakarta, which begins on Thursday.

Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand are all competing in the event.

As the host, Indonesia is fielding two teams — the Red team composed of senior national team players and the White squad which features junior players.

As soon as the tournament finishes, Perbasasi will announce the 23-player squad for the Asian Games training camp, of which 17 will make the final cut.

Ramos clinches Asian Games slot

VETERAN Merculio Ramos clinched a slot in the national team competing in the Guangzhou Asian Games in November after ruling the 150-kilometer massed start race yesterday that ended the unified cycling trials in Tagaytay.
Showing up well-prepared for the race, Ramos, 32, towed the pack in the final 35 kilometers slots and crossed the finish line in 3:55:06.14, four seconds faster than second placer Renato Sembrano. Ramos caught up with the breakaway group in Balayan, Batangas, and never eased up in the chase for Asiad slots.
"Hinila ko na sila, masyadong mabagal. Ensayado naman ako," said Ramos.
Completing the four-man for the road race event were Sherwin Carrera who finished third and Baler Ravina who salvaged fourth.
In all, 39 riders secured slots in the national team in the five-day unified trials held by the PhilCycling headed by Tagaytay Mayor Bambol Tolentino and Integrated Cycling President Arnulfo Taberdo and backed by Koten.
A total of 27 riders earned the right to represent the country in track events, five clinched mountain bike slots while three others secured berths in the road race individual time trial event.

MVP boxing meet winners enjoy edge

July 27, 2010, 5:48pm
Winners in the recent first Manny V. Pangilinan International Boxing Cup last week will have an extra edge over the rest of the members of the RP training pool in securing berths to the Philippine team for the Guangzhou Asian Games this November.
This was the consensus of Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP), saying the inaugural event is part of the basis in selecting the members of the RP squad.
Eight boxers – five female and three male – stood out in the MVP Cup by winning their respective divisions in the event held at the Philippine International Convention Center.
Emerging winners were Charly Suarez (featherweight), Jeogin Ladon (light), Delfin Boholst (welter), Josie Gabuco (pin), Alice Aparri (light fly), Annie Albania (fly), Annalisa Cruz (bantam) and Nesthy Petecio (feather).
The women’s squad, however, outshone its male counterparts by sweeping all the five division contested in the five-day event.

China's Guangzhou city ready to host Asian Games, as Delhi struggles with CWG 2010

Even as New Delhi continues to wrestle with meeting construction and city upkeep deadlines for the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG) to be held in October, the Chinese city of Guangzhou has announced it is ready to host the16th Asian Games.

The 16th Asian Games will take place in Guangzhou from November 12 to 27. Guangzhou is the second city in China to host the Games after Beijing in 1990.

Over 14,000 athletes, trainers and coaches from 45 countries and regions are expected to compete in a total of 476 events in 42 sports.

All 53 competition venues and 17 training venues available for the Games are ready. These include the Asian Games Town, which consists of the Athletes' Village, Technical Officials Village, Media Village, Main Media Center and International Broadcast Center.

Contrastingly, in Delhi, only marginal venue- Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and RK Khanna Tennis Stadium are said to be fully operational.

The remaing stadiums such as the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, Tyagaraj Sports Complex, Maj. Dhyan Chand National Stadium, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range, Yamuna Sports Complex and Delhi University are still not ready.

Reports indicate that a series of test events entitled 'Vigorous Guangzhou' have commenced from May and will go on till September prior to the opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Games.

The 'Vigorous Guangzhou' series of test events includes a number of provincial sporting events (accounting for 60 percent), national competition events (accounting for 30 percent) and regional or international competitions (accounting for 10 percent), covering 34 of the Guangzhou Asian Games sports and five of the Guangzhou Asian Para Games sports.

Thirty-seven sport events under the name of 'Vigorous Guangzhou' are to be held in the Games competition venues in Guangzhou, with the other two in the co-host cities of Foshan and Dongguan respectively.

The New Delhi Commonwealth Games have been plagued by delays in the construction of infrastructure and venues, which should have been finished months ago for test events but instead are just starting to come on line now.

Guangzhou is also paying host to the Asian Para Games from December 12 to 19, 2010, two weeks after the conclusion of The 16th Asian Games, featuring 3,000 athletes from 41 Asian countries and regions competing in 19 sports.

The 2010 Asian Para Games will feature 19 sports, including 17 Paralympic sports and two non-Paralympic sports.

There will be 26 venues for the Games, including 19 competition venues and seven training venues, clustered in four major areas: The Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, Tianhe Sports Center, Higher Education Mega Center and Asian Games Town.

It is the first time the two Games have been be held in one city.

On the civic construction front, Delhi clearly lags behind in comparison to Guangzhou. Media reports have indicated that the Indian capital continues to be dotted with piles of rubbish and discarded construction material.

In contrast, many old apartment buildings in Guangzhou are getting a new look ahead of the Asian Games.

Guangzhou plans to invest a total of seven billion Yuan before the Asian Games to spruce up the city, including renovation of old buildings and roads

To project a better city image during the Asian Games, Guangzhou has been replacing about 1,000 old flat roofs with new red roofs made of synthetic resin since the end of 2009, according to the municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

China has also steeped up security surveillance ahead of the Asian Games.

"You have entered into an area that is being monitored by an intelligent video surveillance system," read the black Chinese characters on a board near an entrance to Huaqiao Xincun on the busy Huanshidong road in Guangzhou's Yuexiu District, reports China Daily.

The tiny surveillance camera is operational round the clock. Guangzhou residents have welcomed the video cameras with open arms.

Meanwhile, tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games and Asian Para Games are on sale to the public worldwide since Monday.

The public can log onto the official ticketing Web site of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games to apply for the tickets. Each person can only submit a booking request, but all the four ceremonies can be applied for in one booking with fewer than two tickets for every ceremony.

A total of 5,000 tickets will be available to the public for the opening ceremonies of the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Games and another 5,000 for the closing ceremony.

For the Guangzhou 2010 Asian Para Games, 10,000 tickets for the opening ceremonies will be sold and another 10,000 will be available for the closing ceremonies.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi is being touted as the biggest international sporting event to be hosted by India since the 1982 Delhi Asian Games.

Its success is being seen as the first step for India to bid for bigger events, but still New Delhi is not ready for it.

Of late, the pending work related to CWG 2010 has drawn wide public attention.

Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday, however, claimed that all pending work would be completed on time before the Commonwealth Games.

"31st August is the deadline, all the work will be done. In September, the finishing touches will be given. All the contractors related to electricity, street-scaping were all called for a briefing," said Dikshit.

"We told them that if they face any problem from any other agency including the police they would be helped; we even requested the police and they have even agreed to it that they will not arrest anybody, who is working at nights," she added.

Sheila Dikshit also warned that contractors who do sub-standard work or fail to meet the Aug 31 deadline to complete Commonwealth Games projects would be blacklisted and penalised.

She said the Delhi Government has also received complaints of low quality work from some parts of the capital, adding that another meeting with the contractors will be held Aug 10 to review the progress.

The chief minister also exhorted the contractors to personally visit the sites and said that street lighting; street-scaping, signage and greening work should be of high quality.

She also issued directives to the Public Working Department (PWD) to concentrate on completing works on roads close to the Games Village and to ensure proper street lighting.

Moreover, with just 68 days to go, the organisers still don't know when to release the plethora of Commonwealth Games 2010-branded merchandise in the market to help Delhi don the look of a city about to host a global showpiece event.

The Organising Committee (OC) was supposed to release the unique branded items months in advance, giving Delhiites enough time to get them into circulation and build the buzz about the Games (ANI)
